Interdisciplinary Encounters 2020
Edena is an example of compositions produced with OCTO. ⒸGuillaume Pascale
Presentation
OCTO is the name given to a series of portable electronic devices designed to activate raw data streams in the form of musical sequences. Communicating with a range of sensors or a smartphone, the system interprets data streams according to a customizable note matrix played by a connected synthesizer.
OCTO offers an original musical creation system that no longer relies solely on the composer’s individual intention, but rather on their inclination to compose with surrounding events through a sympoietic approach.
OCTOomni and OCTObox allow for the processing and sequencing of data received via a Bluetooth protocol. OCTOegg collects data using its sensors, including atmospheric pressure, temperature, and light levels. OCTOomni and OCTObox can also receive data from a dedicated mobile application that collects, among other things, the real-time position of an Earth observation satellite, the composer’s location, or simply a word.

Author
Guillaume Pascale explores the unstable and speculative nature of information technologies. He creates anticipatory works that combine audiovisual production, programming, robotics, graphic environments, and sound creation. His visual research examines, among other things, the perception of the terrestrial environment through the conditions suggested by digital environments and the contemporary ways in which images are created.
