Her thesis aims to rethink the design of interfaces used by audiovisual performance artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover has-parallax\" style=\"min-height:575px\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-0 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div role=\"img\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-19894 has-parallax\" style=\"background-position:50% 50%;background-image:url(http:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO24_001.jpg)\"><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:30px\">How can we make the stage presence of audiovisual artists more interesting and interactive, both for themselves and for their audience?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">NUAGE experimentation, test session at the SAT, Photo credit: Yan Breuleux, Visuals: R\u00e9mi Lapierre<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interfaces traditionally used for the creation of audiovisual performative works are mainly software tools. They are graphical user interfaces that offer little possibility of interaction to the artist, in addition to making him\/her invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilodeau therefore proposes the use of &#8220;tangible&#8221; interfaces as an alternative to traditional computers, screens, keyboards and mouse. Her thesis presents a new design methodology anchored in the principles of &#8220;tangible interaction&#8221; [1] to guide the design of audiovisual performative interfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to test and implement the proposed design methodology, the NUAGE interface prototype was designed and then tested in a real context of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(135deg,rgb(238,238,238) 0%,rgb(85,85,85) 100%)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>R\u00e9sum\u00e9 de la m\u00e9thodologie<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The design methodology proposed by Bilodeau is based on 4 main principles of tangible interaction [2]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Tangibility and materiality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical embodiment of data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bodily interaction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real space embeddedness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, interfaces must be physical, represent data in a physical way, allow for bodily interaction and fit into real physical space.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The methodology identifies the design intentions specific to audiovisual performative interfaces. Thus, a tangible interface should meet the following objectives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Expressiveness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Performativity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aesthetics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Finally, the methodology proposes a taxonomy of the different types of audiovisual tangible interfaces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Interactive Surface and Tabletops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constructive Assemblies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Token and Constraints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure Based Interfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wearables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motion Based Interfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Augmented Common Instruments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">For more details on the methodology, see Marie-Eve Bilodeau&#8217;s master&#8217;s thesis &#8220;M\u00e9thodologie de conception des interfaces tangibles audiovisuelles et artistiques&#8221; [3].<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>Design of the NUAGE interface<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NUAGE interface aims to meet all the design intentions of the methodology. It implements two of the interface types, Pressure Based Interface and Motion Based Interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NUAGE (Cloud) is a 3D silicone structure. Its seven hollow and independent bubbles give it the appearance of a cumulus. Each bubble is equipped with a barometric pressure sensor. The central bubble is equipped with an orientation sensor. The structure of the NUAGE was made by pouring liquid silicone into a mold designed in 3D printing. The sensors inserted in the NUAGE are connected to an electronic prototyping platform which processes the data received and retransmits them by the OSC communication protocol via WiFi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NUAGE is a control interface. Just like a keyboard or a MIDI keypad would be. The OSC data it transmits can be used by content generation software, such as TouchDesigner, to create visual and sound effects.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"332\" src=\"http:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO24_002-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19899\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The use of the NUAGE is instinctive. It is a matter of taking it in your hands, pressing on the bubbles and moving it freely in the air. A context close to its real future use. An experimentation was carried out with participants in the fall of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artist-participants were given the mandate to create a 5-minute audiovisual work controlled by the NUAGE. The visuals were developed by artist-programmer R\u00e9mi Lapierre. He developed a procedural 3D animation generation system using TouchDesigner. Yan Breuleux [co-researcher, UQAC-NAD] realized the sound part of the work in collaboration with Claude Asselin. An informal discussion followed. The questions and discussions focused on the perception of the interface and the performance in relation to the design intentions listed above. For example, the need to make the interface more robust, more sensitive and more visible was noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>Towards new collaborative projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this first collaboration with Professor Yan Breuleux was born the desire to pursue her research on the narrativity of tangible interfaces in the context of immersive performance. Thus, a second round of creation took place in spring 2022 with an improved version of NUAGE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This led to the Hexagram interdisciplinary encounter <a href=\"https:\/\/rencontres.hexagram.ca\/en-ca\/allcategories-en-ca\/22-emergence-y\/emergence-y-content\/135-experimentations-et-table-ronde-nuages\"><em>Embodied Meaning<\/em>&nbsp;: A\/V performance Nuages in Fulldome format using a tangible interface (SUR_Exposure series)<\/a>. The project was carried out with the participation of a group of interdisciplinary master&#8217;s and doctoral students from the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, NAD and \u00c9TS.
