The development team is a collaboration between professor, artist, and co-investigator member <strong>Marie\u2011Christiane Mathieu<\/strong>, and graduate student members from the School of Arts at Universit\u00e9 Laval: <strong>Jonathan Cantin\u2011Demers<\/strong> and <strong>Vincent Isabel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presented from April 17 to May 25, 2025, at the Galerie des arts visuels of Universit\u00e9 Laval, the exhibition takes the form of an installation consisting of a sculpture, photographs, and a virtual reality experience developed specifically for the gallery space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO70_01.png\" alt=\"Casque VR et \u00e9quipement sur un chariot rappelant du mobilier d'astronautes.\" class=\"wp-image-23128\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><sup>Sculpture and installation in the gallery, 2025<\/sup><\/em><sup>. \u24b8Marie-Christiane Mathieu<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nous sommes tous des astronautes \u2014 Context and Research Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The beginnings of the project follow the <em>NSTDA<\/em> methodology. Launched in 2021, the research project brings together researchers and students from undergraduate to doctoral levels at the School of Arts and the School of Architecture at Universit\u00e9 Laval. <em>NSTDA<\/em> responds to recommendations from the 2018 report <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.gc.ca\/site\/eng\/9.865811\/publication.html\"><em>The next generation of emerging global challenges: a Horizons&nbsp;2030 perspective on research opportunities<\/em><\/a>, commissioned by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the proposed objectives, the following were retained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Rethinking creative practice through speculative projections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going into the field and\/or recreating difficult environments to test survival habitats (capsules).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solving material and technological challenges through interdisciplinarity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessing issues related to climate change, particularly flooding and rising water levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, Marie\u2011Christiane Mathieu, aboard her own survival habitat\u2014a 2011 Mercedes Sprinter\u2014travelled to Lafayette, Louisiana, to witness firsthand the extent of damage caused by Hurricane Ida (August 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO70_02.png\" alt=\"Maison sur pilotis en Louisiane \u00e9ventr\u00e9e par un ouragan. \" class=\"wp-image-23130\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>Trip to Louisiana, 2021. \u24b8Marie-Christiane Mathieu<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the inspiration for the exhibition project emerged: from field experience that led to reflections and speculations on the territorial fragility of Quebec City, specifically the flood risks of its lower town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Statistics and Flood Studies<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To develop the hypothetical flooding of the gallery, we relied on the <a href=\"https:\/\/geoinondations.gouv.qc.ca\/\">interactive flood\u2011risk maps of Quebec<\/a>. In the spirit of our research, using speculative methodologies, we gathered all factors that could accelerate flooding within the university gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO70_03.png\" alt=\"Carte des zones inondables en 2030 de la ville de Qu\u00e9bec.\" class=\"wp-image-23132\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>Flood\u2011Risk Zones in 2030. First, due to global pollution, the estimated increase in average temperature contributes to sea\u2011level rise. Second, precipitation patterns are changing: results show an overall increase in rainfall intensity, which is relevant for our speculative scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gallery\u2019s physical situation adds to these factors: it is located in a semi\u2011basement of the Fabrique building, making it prone to flooding. A large parking lot separates the building from access to the upper town, suggesting the possibility of runoff flowing toward it. In our speculative scenario, we also imagine ruptures in heating or water circulation pipes inside the gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering the rising water levels and increased rainfall, together with the gallery\u2019s physical context\u2014especially its proximity to the Saint\u2011Charles River\u2014we established our flooding scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Digital Shadow\u2014Virtual and Physical Realities<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience was designed based on a 3D model aligned precisely with the gallery\u2019s physical structure. This space between physical and digital realms creates an interplay that echoes the concept of the \u201cdigital shadow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After modelling the gallery, we identified four possible water entry points: the main door, the facade windows, the ceiling sprinkler pipes, and a drain located in the back storage room. Adjacent to this concept is the \u201cdigital twin,\u201d referring to the agency that exists between a physical object and its digital shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study day was held on February 14, 2025, gathering professors, researchers, and students. Her research explores hostile environments and the forms of life they generate. She seeks to define an aesthetics of transit and develops artistic methods aimed at constructing critical objects functioning as forms of foresight influencing other disciplines.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collaborators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uk-card uk-card-default uk-padding large\">\n<p><b>Vincent Isabel<\/b> is a tinkerer, sound artist, and performer based in Quebec City, on the ancestral territories of the Wendat, Innu, and Abenaki peoples. His practice explores dynamics between his body, his intimacy, and the technological materials around him. Seeking to create sonic instruments and systems that challenges mastery, he provokes and navigates through loss of control as a performance frame.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate of a BFA from Emily Carr University in 2024, Vincent is currently pursuing a master\u2019s degree in visual arts at Universit\u00e9 Laval and collaborating with Avatar as part of the artist centre master\u2019s residency.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><b>Jonathan Cantin-Demers<\/b> lives and works in Quebec City as a professional artist. He holds a graduate diploma in visual arts (2026) from the \u00c9cole d\u2019art at Universit\u00e9 Laval. His work has been presented at the Galerie des arts visuels, notably in the exhibitions Banc d\u2019essai (2022) and Traverser l\u2019imm\u00e9diat (2025), as well as during Mars de la ma\u00eetrise (2024, 2025). Since 2024, he has collaborated on various public art projects as part of EXMURO\u2019s technical team and has held research assistant positions on several artistic and research projects.
