Chantier Performa presents a lecture\u2011demonstration by Volmar Klien<\/strong><\/a> in the mini\u2011dome of the Groupe de recherche sur la m\u00e9diatisation du son (GRMS). The composer will demonstrate modes of sonic spatiality in his work and how these generate forms of spatial poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This activity is presented in collaboration with the Musiques Cach\u00e9es<\/a> laboratory, as part of the 2026<\/strong> Interdisciplinary Encounters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Volmar Klien<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Klien\u2019s works have been recognized, exhibited, performed, and presented in a wide range of contexts. He has received commissions from the Volksoper Wien<\/a> (Vienna, Austria) and the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media & Performing Arts Center<\/a> (EMPAC, Troy, NY). At Transitio MX<\/a> (Mexico City), he created a multimedia installation exploring acoustic landscapes. In his installation Aural Codes<\/em>, funded by Arts Council England, he transformed London\u2019s radio sphere into an exhibition space, inviting residents to tune in and interact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has also collaborated extensively with his brother, choreographer Michael Klien<\/a>, on numerous performative projects exploring the relationships between sound, bodily movement, and human communication. Works from this ongoing collaboration have been produced and presented at ZKM Karlsruhe<\/a>, Ballet Frankfurt<\/a>, the Hayward Gallery in London, and more recently by the Martha Graham Company<\/a> in cooperation with the New Museum<\/a> (New York).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkmar Klien\u2019s work has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Austrian Republic\u2019s National Composition Grant, an Honourable Mention at the Ars Electronica Prize<\/a>, the Max Brand Prize for Electronic Music, a fellowship with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Alban Berg Scholarship, and the Gustav Mahler Prize for Composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Klien\u2019s artistic practice is grounded in an academic research background. He holds a PhD in electroacoustic composition from City University of London and has held research positions at the Royal College of Art<\/a> in London, the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence<\/a> (OFAI), and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He is currently Professor of Composition and Director of the Institute for Composition, Conducting, and Computer Music at Anton Bruckner University in Linz<\/a>, Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
