{"id":457,"date":"2017-02-28T16:17:19","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T16:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hexagram.uqam.ca\/ivla-2016-engaging-the-senses\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T15:22:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T20:22:07","slug":"ivla-2016-engaging-the-senses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/en\/ivla-2016-engaging-the-senses\/","title":{"rendered":"IVLA 2016 &#8211; Engaging the Senses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 class=\"uk-text-bold\">The 48th Annual Conference of the International Visual Literacy Association<br \/>October 5-8, 2016<\/h5>\n<p class=\"uk-text-justify\">IVLA\u2019s annual conference provides scholars and researchers, teachers and students, artists, and other professionals with interests and activities relating to the multidisciplinary field of Visual Literacy, an opportunity to present their work and interact with peers. <!--more-->  It also features keynotes by three luminaries. The conference will be hosted by the Concordia Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture in collaboration with the Department of Art Education, the Department of Design and Computation Arts, and the Centre for Sensory Studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uk-text-justify\">The Hexagram Network is proud to support David Howes , Hexagram member and anthropology professor at Concordia University, in the 2016 IVLA conference organization. We also want to mention the participation of Hexagram members Jason Lewis, Kathleen Vaughan, Gis\u00e8le Trudel, Leila Sujir, Tagny Duff and Lynn Hughes.<\/p>\n<h5>ABOUT:<\/h5>\n<p class=\"uk-text-justify\">Visual Literacy is already a field of multidisciplinary investigation. How might it also become a field of multisensory and\/or intersensory investigation? For example, how does seeing as a way of sensing and making sense of the world differ from reading, or touching, or dancing? As Isadora Duncan famously remarked: \u201cIf I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it!\u201d ? Or, how can the insights derived from the study of Visual Literacy be extended to other modalities of sense, such as sound studies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"uk-text-justify\">In asking these questions, the conference seeks to revisit and recuperate the original definition of \u201cVisual Literacy.\u201d In the words of John Debes (Co-founder of the IVLA), Visual Literacy refers to \u201ca group of vision competencies a human being can develop by seeing and at the same time having and integrating other sensory experiences\u201d (1969).  More recently, Brian Kennedy (Director of the Toledo Museum of Art) proposed that \u201cVisual Literacy is the key to sensory literacy\u201d (2014).
