AN ARTIST TALK BY LEISURE (MEREDITH CARRUTHERS AND SUSANNAH WESLEY), AND ALTHEA THAUBURGER<\/h5>\n

Monday May 8th 2017 – 3PM<\/p>\n

\u201cArtists Animate the Expo 67 Archives\u201d will highlight artists\u2019 processes of working in\/with archives by presenting discussing, and reflecting on three artists research-creation processes: Leisure (Meredith Carruthers and Susannah Wesley), and Althea Thauburger. These artists are contributing to In Search of Expo 67 at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al (June 21 to October 8, 2017) co-curated by Lesley Johnstone and Monika Kin Gagnon, an exhibition of new works and several archival multi-screen films. Thauburger and Leisure have both been working in the Post Image Cluster to produce their works. The curatorial process will also be highlighted, as co-curators Lesley Johnstone (MAC) and Monika Kin Gagnon will moderate conversations with the artists.<\/p>\n

In Search of Expo 67 brings together works by nineteen Qu\u00e9bec and Canadian artists inspired by the most innovative, experimental and provocative dimensions of the original event, and its artistic, social and political context. Created in dialogue with the spirit of 1967, these works (sixteen of which are newly commissioned) challenge some of the underlying presumptions of Expo 67 while also highlighting its undeniable inventiveness. The exhibition is co-curated by Lesley Johnstone and Monika Kin Gagnon at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019art contemporain from June 21 to October 8, 2017<\/p>\n

Leisure take as their point of departure, the \u2018Environment for Creative Play and Learning\u2019 in the Children\u2019s Creative Centre at Expo 67, an adventure playground designed by the innovative Canadian landscape architect Cornelia Hahn-Oberlander. Panning For Gold \/ Walking You Through It explores Oberlander\u2019s alternative methodological approach to design, which considered and incorporated child-care and professional practice.<\/p>\n

Althea Thauberger\u2019s L\u2019arbre est dans ses feuilles explores the story of The People Tree, part of the Canada Pavilion, organized by NFB Still Image Division Archive from 1963-1966. The original spherical structure resembled a maple tree and held hundreds of photographs of Canadians and was conceived as a portrait of Canada at the Centennial celebrations. Althea has worked from the NFB archives currently held at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.<\/p>\n

This event is organized by the Post Image Cluster with the generous support of Hexagram and the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology.<\/p>\n
