Il explore la fronti\u00e8re entre le mat\u00e9riel et le comportement \u00e0 travers les mouvements adaptatifs d\u2019agents robotiques sph\u00e9ro\u00efdes recouverts de silicone. Les artistes <a href=\"https:\/\/sofianaudry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sofian Audry<\/a> [cochercheur\u00b7euse, UQAM] et <a href=\"https:\/\/rosaliedumont-gagne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rosalie D. Gagn\u00e9<\/a> [collaboratrice] d\u00e9crivent cette enveloppe comme une \u00ab\u2009peau\u2009\u00bb, lui conf\u00e9rant des formes irr\u00e9guli\u00e8res et vari\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Issu d\u2019une r\u00e9flexion artistique sur la ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nologie des syst\u00e8mes vivants, <em>Morphoses<\/em> propose une exp\u00e9rience po\u00e9tique et incarn\u00e9e de l\u2019apprentissage automatis\u00e9, en favorisant une relation affective entre des formes de vie humaines et non humaines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette DEMO retrace le d\u00e9veloppement du projet, lors d\u2019une r\u00e9sidence \u00e0 l\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/milieux.concordia.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institut Milieux pour les arts, culture et technologie<\/a> au printemps\u00a02024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La cr\u00e9ation \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e8re de l\u2019apprentissage automatique<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le progr\u00e8s fulgurant de l\u2019intelligence artificielle, propuls\u00e9 par les grands mod\u00e8les d\u2019apprentissage profond, a donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 une \u00ab\u20094e&nbsp;r\u00e9volution industrielle\u2009\u00bb (Schwab, 2016) o\u00f9 les syst\u00e8mes computationnels adaptatifs prennent rapidement en charge des t\u00e2ches intellectuelles. Au c\u0153ur de cette r\u00e9volution se trouve l\u2019apprentissage automatique, une branche de l\u2019IA qui permet aux machines d\u2019apprendre par elles-m\u00eames \u00e0 partir des donn\u00e9es du monde r\u00e9el.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019apprentissage automatique est de plus en plus mobilis\u00e9 pour la cr\u00e9ation artistique, le plus souvent en entra\u00eenant des mod\u00e8les g\u00e9n\u00e9ratifs imposants afin de g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des contenus m\u00e9diatiques de toutes sortes&nbsp;: texte, image, musique, etc. Cette approche h\u00e9g\u00e9monique pr\u00e9sente plusieurs probl\u00e8mes&nbsp;: elle est \u00e9nergivore, non respectueuse des droits d\u2019auteurs et tend \u00e0 une uniformisation de la culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Des entit\u00e9s apprenantes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Morphoses<\/em> s\u2019\u00e9carte de cette approche dominante en proposant d\u2019utiliser le processus m\u00eame d\u2019apprentissage pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des comportements au sein d\u2019une installation de vie artificielle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspir\u00e9 par les tortues artificielles du cybern\u00e9ticien Grey Walter (Walter, 1950) et par les dessins du naturaliste Ernst Haeckel (Haeckel, 1974), le projet met en sc\u00e8ne des agents sph\u00e9ro\u00efdes autonomes dont les comportements \u00e9mergent en temps r\u00e9el gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un algorithme d\u2019apprentissage par renforcement. Ces entit\u00e9s re\u00e7oivent des r\u00e9compenses positives ou n\u00e9gatives, visibles par une lueur verte ou rouge, en fonction de leurs actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO53_01-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18333\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>Cr\u00e9dit photo\u00a0: L\u00e9a Martin<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Esth\u00e9tique du comportement adaptatif<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce projet s\u2019inscrit dans le champ de l\u2019esth\u00e9tique du comportement (Penny, 1997). Ce domaine \u00e9mergent des arts num\u00e9riques utilise les comportements des syst\u00e8mes artificiels comme mati\u00e8re artistique. Plut\u00f4t que de viser l\u2019optimisation ou la performance, <em>Morphoses<\/em> mobilise le processus d\u2019apprentissage au profit d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience esth\u00e9tique incarn\u00e9e. En mettant l\u2019accent sur les comportements adaptatifs et leur potentialit\u00e9 perceptive, sensible et \u00e9motionnelle, l\u2019installation interroge les fronti\u00e8res entre humain et non-humain. Comment la forme et la mati\u00e8re influencent-elles le comportement des agents\u2009? Quelles \u00e9motions suscitent l\u2019observation d\u2019agents apprenants\u2009?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En explorant les qualit\u00e9s esth\u00e9tiques spatiales et temporelles des comportements adaptatifs, le projet invite ainsi \u00e0 repenser la nature de l\u2019intelligence artificielle, non comme une force utilitaire ou mena\u00e7ante, mais comme un processus fragile, \u00e9volutif et po\u00e9tique, ouvrant de nouvelles voies pour la recherche-cr\u00e9ation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Apprentissage par renforcement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019\u0153uvre repose sur le d\u00e9ploiement en temps r\u00e9el de comportements adaptatifs. Les agents robotiques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re it\u00e9rative, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019obtention de prototypes fonctionnels, r\u00e9pliqu\u00e9s en trois exemplaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO53_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18323\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces agents utilisent l\u2019apprentissage par renforcement, une m\u00e9thode qui permet \u00e0 un agent artificiel d\u2019apprendre par lui-m\u00eame \u00e0 atteindre un objectif (Sutton &amp; Barto, 2018). Par exemple, dans des exp\u00e9riences pr\u00e9liminaires&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Un robot apprenait \u00e0 s\u2019arr\u00eater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initialement, il ne connaissait rien de son environnement et activait ses moteurs de mani\u00e8re al\u00e9atoire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Progressivement, il oscillait, puis finissait par s\u2019immobiliser compl\u00e8tement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bien que l\u2019objectif semble simple, le comportement r\u00e9sultant est souvent complexe et impr\u00e9visible. Chaque mode comportemental a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 empiriquement, car les comportements g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s ne peuvent pas \u00eatre anticip\u00e9s avec pr\u00e9cision, m\u00eame en connaissant les objectifs d\u00e9finis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Param\u00e9trer et influencer le comportement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chaque comportement r\u00e9sulte de l\u2019interaction entre diff\u00e9rentes composantes. Chaque comportement est cr\u00e9\u00e9 \u00e0 partir de trois grandes cat\u00e9gories de contraintes. D\u2019abord, les <strong>observations<\/strong> (ou \u00e9tats) de l\u2019agent d\u00e9terminent l\u2019information \u00e0 laquelle il a acc\u00e8s afin de prendre ses d\u00e9cisions. Les <strong>actions<\/strong> disponibles impactent sa capacit\u00e9 d\u2019agir sur son monde. Finalement, la fonction de <strong>r\u00e9compense<\/strong> d\u00e9termine le niveau de succ\u00e8s d\u2019une action en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 une observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Par exemple, pour r\u00e9aliser le comportement intitul\u00e9 \u00ab\u2009Se balancer sans rouler.\u2009\u00bb, les observations sont d\u00e9finies par le mouvement interne\u2009; les actions possibles sont&nbsp;: avancer, reculer, \u00e0 gauche, \u00e0 droite\u2009; et les agents sont r\u00e9compens\u00e9s positivement lorsqu\u2019ils g\u00e9n\u00e8rent un mouvement interne et n\u00e9gativement lorsqu\u2019ils se d\u00e9placent horizontalement au sol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En plus de ces param\u00e8tres directement contr\u00f4lables par les artistes, au niveau physique, la <strong>forme<\/strong> et la <strong>mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9<\/strong> de l\u2019agent (texture, poids, centre de masse, etc.) combin\u00e9es \u00e0 son <strong>environnement<\/strong> (surface de d\u00e9placement, obstacles, fronti\u00e8res de l\u2019espace, etc.) constituent des \u00e9l\u00e9ments importants influen\u00e7ant le comportement. Par exemple, un agent aura plus de facilit\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser la t\u00e2che \u00ab\u2009Se balancer sans rouler\u2009\u00bb s\u2019il est coll\u00e9 sur un obstacle ou s\u2019il est plus lourd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/hexagram.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/DEMO53_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18325\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visualiser et repr\u00e9senter l\u2019apprentissage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afin de pr\u00e9senter les diff\u00e9rents comportements, l\u2019\u0153uvre se d\u00e9ploie sous forme d\u2019une performance d\u2019environ 15&nbsp;minutes o\u00f9 s\u2019encha\u00eenent les diff\u00e9rents comportements de mani\u00e8re s\u00e9quentielle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour chacun des comportements, un court titre est projet\u00e9 au mur l\u2019espace de pr\u00e9sentation&nbsp;: \u00ab\u2009Being still\u2009\u00bb, \u00ab\u2009Moving toward the wall\u2009\u00bb, \u00ab\u2009Being curious\u2009\u00bb, afin de permettre au visiteur d\u2019interpr\u00e9ter les diff\u00e9rents comportements ou intentions des agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u2019autre part, un \u00e9cran de visualisation permet de suivre en temps r\u00e9el le niveau de r\u00e9compense (positive ou n\u00e9gative) attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 chaque agent, en fonction de la mani\u00e8re dont les actions pos\u00e9es le rapprochent ou l\u2019\u00e9loignent du but vis\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enfin, \u00e0 travers la membrane de silicone translucide qui leur sert de peau, on peut deviner les mouvements int\u00e9rieurs des moteurs et des contrepoids gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un syst\u00e8me de diodes lumineuses qui \u00e9met diff\u00e9rentes couleurs oscillantes du rouge au vert en fonction du fait que les actions pos\u00e9es les rapprochent ou les \u00e9loignent de leur objectif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DEMO53_Morphose (S.Audry &amp; R.D. Les r\u00e9actions furent vari\u00e9es&nbsp;: certaines personnes ne percevaient pas l\u2019apprentissage en tant que tel, alors que d\u2019autres notaient clairement une \u00e9volution dans le comportement, en particulier en lien avec la laborieuse dynamique essais-erreur des agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019installation a depuis \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e en premi\u00e8re mondiale au <a href=\"https:\/\/neuberger.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neuberger Museum of Art<\/a> (New York, \u00c9tats-Unis), du 18\u00a0septembre au 22\u00a0d\u00e9cembre 2024, dans le cadre de l\u2019exposition <em>Rosalie D. Gagn\u00e9\u00a0: A Contemporary Alchemist<\/em>. Son livre Art in the Age of Machine Learning se penche sur les pratiques artistiques de l\u2019apprentissage automatis\u00e9 (MIT Press, 2021). Ses projets artistiques se d\u00e9ploient \u00e0 travers de multiples formes telles la robotique, l\u2019installation, le bioart et la litt\u00e9rature \u00e9lectronique.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uk-card uk-card-default uk-padding large\">\n<p><b>Rosalie D. Gagn\u00e9<\/b> est active dans les arts visuels depuis le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000. Elle int\u00e8gre progressivement le num\u00e9rique \u00e0 ses \u0153uvres \u00e0 partir de 2007, apr\u00e8s avoir occup\u00e9 le poste d\u2019assistante de recherche \u00e0 l\u2019Institut Hexagram (maintenant Institut Milieux) durant ses \u00e9tudes de ma\u00eetrise \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Concordia, Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sa d\u00e9marche s\u2019enracine dans la ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nologie de la mati\u00e8re et de la perception. Int\u00e9ress\u00e9e \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des exp\u00e9riences sensorielles et perceptuelles, l\u2019artiste r\u00e9alise des installations sculpturales immersives et con\u00e7oit des environnements r\u00e9actifs.
