In this talk, Ren\u00e9e Green will address her notion of \u201cresearch-creation\u201d by tracing aspects of its genealogy through a selection of projects which stress the interrelation- ship between the creation of aesthetic forms and thought, a complex process which is addressed in her forthcoming book of selected writings, Other Planes of There. The book focuses on the artist\u2019s approaches over time and in relation with a variety of situations to engage reflectively as an artist-thinker amidst perceptual, intellectual, technological, economic, and geopolitical shifts during a period spanning 1981 to 2010. Green will in addition reference the intersec- tion of developing work in relation to the project Cinematic Migrations, which she initiated and is currently ongoing at the MIT Program of Art, Culture and Technology.<\/p>\n

In 2010, Ren\u00e9e Green committed to paper her thoughts on the topic of \u2018artistic research\u2019, a category of praxis which had occupied Green herself in practice throughout her career before it had begun to accrue a name, and through this, a nomenclature. The paper was an attempt to think both the work performed \u201cbefore the term was designated as such,\u201d and the shape of artistic-thinking in the framework of various supporting institutions. This seminar takes as its point of departure Green\u2019s thoughts about the paradoxes experi- enced by artist-thinkers and extends these thoughts through a consideration of her own creative and critical practice, as well as her shifting institutional locations. After Green\u2019s pre- sentation, a discussion will follow among participants about the polysemous quality of practices without a name, the paradoxes of interdisciplinarity and the enabling and con- straining frameworks of institutions.<\/p>\n

Ren\u00e9e Green is an artist, film- maker and writer. Via films, essays and writings, installations, digital media, architecture, sound-related works, film series and events her work engages with investigations into circuits of relation and exchange over time, the gaps and shifts in what survives in public and private memories as well as what has been imagined and invented. She also focuses on the effects of a changing trans- cultural sphere on what can now be made and thought. Her exhibitions, videos and films have been seen throughout the world in museums, biennales and festivals. Green is currently a Professor and Director of the MIT Program of Art, Culture, and Technology.<\/p>\n
