In this hands-on workshop, internationally renowned sound artist, designer and sonic thinker Sam Auinger challenges our visually dominated worldview. We normally understand thinking as an inner and cognitive occupation with ideas, memories and notions in order to form new knowledge.But thinking can also create a space for the auditive in our visually dominated world. Auinger will take the participants on a sonic journey through areas around the EV building and the Concordia Quartier, demonstrating the way in which the sonic environment shapes our ways of being in the world.

This talk will explore five internationally renowned sound installations developed by O+A (Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger) which aim to make sense of the sound environment we live in by listening with attention, hearing, exploring and attempting to understand the cultural waveform as a language. Over twenty-five years, O+A have developed a set of compositional tools to sculpt and transform our sonic environment. These tools allow us to extract the harmonic material from city noise, filter it, shape it and play it back in the moment to transform the feelings, atmosphere, and sound design of that environment. We are able to extract the melodies and make the hidden voices hearable. In a visually dominated culture, thinking with your ears tells a very different story.<\/p>\n
Sam Auinger is a Berlin based composer, sound-artist and sonic thinker. Together with Bruce Odland he founded O+A in 1989. Their central theme is \u201chearing perspective\u201d. Their work is known for large scale, public space sound installations which transform city noise into harmony in real-time. In 2009, O+A started on the \u201cSonic Commons\u201d questioning the dominance of the visual culture in our perception of the world. Beside his artistic work Sam Auinger was a guest professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin, running the department of Experimental Sound Design at Master\u2019s Program Sound Studies. He is currently collaborating with city planners and architects, giving lectures and is a frequent participant in international symposiums on the topic of urban planning, architecture, media, the senses and sound, in specific.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
