ARS ELECTRONICA 2018 - CAMPUS EXHIBITION

Hexagram Network is proud to announce that it will be presenting the campus Exhibition at Ars Electronica Festival in September 2018. This major event in Linz, Austria will put forward research-creation as it is being practiced by Hexagram members' works and methodologies.

ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL

Founded in 1979 by Brucknerhaus and the regional television corporation of Upper Austria (ORF), the Ars Electronica festival is the largest festival in the world dedicated to the relationship between art, technology and society. Combining the exhibition of works, the organization of conferences and the recognition of pioneering electronic-art producers (the "Prix Ars Electronica" were created in 1987), Ars Electronica figures as a foundational event on the international scene of contemporary art. In 1996, with the innauguration of the Ars Electronica Centre, Linz operates year round.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS, EXHIBITION ORGANIZATION TEAM

As one of its missions, Hexagram Network gives student members opportunities to work in professional art and research environment. For this reason, the Network has decided to give Ars Electronica 2018 Campus Exhibition coordination responsibilities to a multidisciplinary student group working with regular members and the Hexagram staff. Not only will the team manage most aspects of the event’s organization, namely Exhibition Design, Technique/Production, Copywriting/Communication, Curation & Coordination, the team will also travel on site, in Linz, Austria for the setup and duration of the event.

Five positions are available for the project’s duration, from January to September 2018. Each position will have specific responsibilities described below, however all members of the team must:

  • Be an enrolled student, preferably an Hexagram student member
  • Be able to collaborate with team members and effectively communicate with others
  • Show initiative and bring solutions to complex problems
  • Be able to work on a flexible schedule
  • Be able to work on short deadlines when expected
  • Have extended availabilities between July and September 2018
  • Be fluent in English (spoken and written), basic knowledge of German would be an asset but is not required
  • Have a valid passport and be able to travel to Linz from last week of August to second week of September 2018 (specific dates to be confirmed)
AVAILABLE POSITIONS

Please read the descriptions below and target your application on one or more specific position(s) that follow your abilities and experience. Please note that there will be overlap and strong collaboration between the positions.

Curatorial Assistant
The Curatorial Assistant will work directly in collaboration with Hexagram’s Programming Committee in order to establish a curatorial concept for the Ars Electronica Campus Exhibition. In addition, the Curatorial Assistant will develop the criteria of the open call, head the selection committee for works with the Programming Committee. He/She will also directly collaborate with the Exhibition Designer and Technical Director to ensure conceptual and curatorial coherence

Exhibition Design
The Exhibition Designer’s main responsibility will be to conceptualize and layout the exhibition and develop/design the graphic content for exhibition. In addition, the Exhibition Designer will have to work closely with the Technical Team in order to plan all technical impact of design decisions. He/She will also be responsible of creating floor plans for the exhibition and communicating to other teams the selected design. On site, the Exhibition Designer will supervise and participate in the installing and make sure the result reflects the curatorial and design concepts.

Project Coordinator
The Project Coordinator will be responsible to the general coordination between selected participants, Hexagram Network and Ars Electronica. This includes, but is not be limited to: having a good overview and understanding of the project and its actors, being in contact with Ars Electronica in Linz, provide the necessary information to all other teams, coordinating travel and shipping, keeping track of expenses, reporting on the budget and organize general meetings with all participants of the project.

The Coordination Agent is a key position. The selected candidate will need to work closely with Hexagram Network administration and all the Exhibition staff in order to plan and execute every detail of the project.

Production Manager
The Production Manager will work with the Hexagram Technical Director and Ars Electronica Technician on site to develop full technical plan for the organization and installation of the works on site. He/She will be responsible for gathering the technical requirement of the proposed works. Preparation of the exhibition (plans, shipping, etc.) in Montreal and in Linz will be a collaboration between the Production Manager and Project Coordinator.

The Production Manager will work with the team to assess the feasibility of the proposed exhibition design and build/install the exhibition on site in collaboration with the Ars Electronica Technicians.

Communications / Copywriter
The core responsibility of the Communications / Copywriter will be to develop a full communication plan between Hexagram and Ars Electronica. He/She will be responsible for developing, writing, editing and proofreading external communication including but not limited to: Artwork description, promotional material, press releases, catalog and any other text based material. The person will also be responsible for interfacing with University communication services and research offices between UQAM and Concordia as well as developing a social media strategy for promotion of the exhibition.
