matralab est à la recherche d’un/e artiste en mi-carrière et/ou établi(e) à ou près de Montréal qui voudrait s’engager dans un nouveau type de projet interdisciplinaire. (voir la section « À propos »). Cet appel ne vise pas la création d’une œuvre interdisciplinaire. Il sollicite plutôt l’apport créatif d’un(e) artiste qui l’aide à développer et à créer une nouvelle œuvre purement musicale.
DESCRIPTION DU PROJET
Pour ce projet intitulé ‘Extases de l’influence’, matralab a reçu une subvention de trois ans du FQRSC (Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture). Le projet de recherche se déroule en parallèle dans trois villes à travers le monde: Montréal (Canada), Berlin (Allemagne) et Pune (Inde). Cet appel concerne la première phase de recherche-création à Montréal. matralab est situé à l’Université Concordia et est dirigé par le professeur Sandeep Bhagwati, compositeur, chef d’orchestre et chercheur de renommée mondiale.
LE COLLABORATEUR/ LA COLLABORATRICE IDÉALE
Artiste en mi-carrière et/ou établi(e) à ou près de Montréal, avec une pratique en dehors de la musique ou des arts du spectacle pleinement développée et largement reconnue, par exemple peintre, poète, romancier, sculpteur, architecte, cinéaste, photographe, ikebana, bonsaï, designer, céramiste, artiste bio, etc.
L’artiste est ouvert à une interrogation de son propre travail, à la discussion et à la formulation de théories sur sa propre pratique créative personnelle.
Une connaissance préalable de la musique ou de la composition n’est absolument pas requise; cependant, une ouverture envers la musique au délà du divertissement ainsi qu’une curiosité artistique à s’engager dans la pensée et la pratique derrière de nombreux genres musicaux différents seront des atouts pour une collaboration réussie.
LA COLLABORATION
Il s’agira d’un dialogue avec un ensemble musical de cinq à dix musiciens d’horizons musicaux variés ainsi qu’avec une équipe d’artistes-chercheurs de différentes universités internationales qui accompagneront et observeront ce processus. La collaboration sera documentée sous la forme d’un enregistrement audio-visuel pour analyse ultérieure, et tous les participants seront interviewés sur vidéo au début et à la fin du processus.
La collaboration peut se faire en français et/ou en anglais.
Pendant et entre les ateliers, l’artiste expliquera ou démontrera ses stratégies créatives personnelles aux musiciens, qui essaieront à leur tour de les traduire en stratégies de composition musicale.
L’artiste accompagnera ce processus, corrigera les erreurs d’interprétation et offrira des conseils artistiques à partir de son point de vue.
L’artiste n’est pas censé créer de nouvelles œuvres dans sa discipline pour ce processus. Ils peuvent utiliser le travail existant comme exemple de leurs stratégies créatives. Bien sûr, l’artiste peut toujours créer lui-même de nouvelles œuvres inspirées par cette collaboration, mais cela ne serait pas considéré comme une commande.
Les phases de travail débuteront en septembre 2018 et se termineront en décembre 2018 et comprendront environ 3 à 4 séances de travail, d’une durée de 1 à 3 jours, selon le besoin de l’idée créatrice.
L’œuvre musicale résultant de cette collaboration sera enregistrée et jouée en concert à la fin de la période de collaboration ou après.
Si cela est souhaité, l’artiste peut être nommé co-auteur de l’œuvre musicale qui en résulte. L’artiste aura également le droit de ne pas être mentionné en relation avec l’œuvre, mais il ne pourra pas empêcher que l’œuvre elle-même soit enregistrée et/ou exécutée.
L’artiste se verra offrir une somme forfaitaire de 500 $ à 2 000 $ pour ses efforts et son temps, selon l’intensité de son implication dans le projet.

Si vous êtes intéressés, nous vous demandons de soumettre une lettre d’intention courte (une page maximum) avec des liens vers un portfolio en ligne, si disponible. La lettre devrait présenter un aperçu de vos stratégies créatives et indiquer le temps que vous pouvez consacrer au projet pendant la période. Si vous avez déjà une idée pour un travail que vous aimeriez utiliser comme point de départ pour cette collaboration, veuillez fournir une brève description avec un lien, si disponible.
ECHEANCIER
Notre recherche se poursuivra jusqu’ à ce que le poste soit rempli. Cependant, nous commencerons à examiner les candidatures après le 5 mars et nous espérons avoir une liste restreinte d’ici le 25 mars. Sandeep Bhagwati et d’autres membres de l’équipe rencontreraient ensuite les artistes présélectionnés en personne pour discuter d’une éventuelle collaboration. Selon le déroulement de ces conversations, nous inviterons 1, 2 ou même 3 artistes pour une collaboration d’ici le 1er mai. Les conversations conceptuelles pourront se poursuivre au cours de l’été, mais les phases de travail concrètes se dérouleront entre septembre et décembre et seront coordonnées par Doodle. La phase de collaboration sera terminée à la mi-décembre. Les concerts et les enregistrements peuvent avoir lieu à une date ultérieure.
A PROPOS DU PROJET « EXTASES DE L’INFLUENCE ».

« Pouvons-nous transférer les stratégies créatives d’autres domaines artistiques vers la création musicale? Peut-on composer une séquence sonore comme un chorégraphe compose une séquence de mouvements dans l’espace, un poète compose un arrangement de mots, un romancier suit des personnages à travers une intrigue? La musique peut-elle être mise en scène de la même manière qu’un metteur en scène met en scène une pièce de théâtre ou qu’un artiste visuel conçoit une installation? Le projet de recherche-création « Exstases de l’influence » (E°I) explore les voies inter-artistiques de conception, de création et de composition d’interprétations et de productions musicales, influencées par les dialogues et les transferts provenant d’autres pratiques artistiques.
Un ensemble de musique intertraditionnelle s’engagera avec des artistes d’autres disciplines pour comprendre leur processus créatif, leurs stratégies esthétiques et leur matériel – et tentera de transposer ces idées dans une composition musicale, à travers un processus itératif et dialogique constant de créativité distribuée. Documenté par une équipe d’artistes-chercheurs, ce projet pourrait permettre de mieux comprendre comment les formes d’art sont différentes – et où elles nous parlent de la même façon. »

Call for Artistic Collaboration
SANDEEP BHAGWATI, MATRALAB
Deadline: March 5, 2018 – Project Workphase: September – December 2018
matralab is looking for a mid-career and/or established artist in Montréal or nearby who would like to engage with a new kind of interdisciplinary project. (see « About » below). This call is not for the creation of an interdisciplinary work. Rather, it solicits an artist’s creative input to help develop and create a new purely musical work.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
For this project, entitled Ecstasies of Influence, matralab has received a three-year grant by the FQRSC (Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture). The research project takes place in parallel in three cities around the world: Montreal (Canada), Berlin (Germany). and Pune (India). This call is for the first research-creation phase in Montreal. matralab is situated at Concordia University and is directed by professor Sandeep Bhagwati, a world-renowned composer, music conductor and academic.
THE IDEAL COLLABORATOR
A mid-career and/or established artist in Montréal or nearby with a fully developed and widely recognized practice outside of music or the performing arts, e.g. painter, poet, novelist, sculptor, architect, filmmaker, photographer, ikebana, bonsai, designer, ceramic artist, bio artist, etc.
The artist should be open to interrogating their own work and discussing and formulating theories about their own personal creative practice.
Prior knowledge about music or composition is absolutely not required; however, an openness to consider music as more than entertainment and an artistic curiosity to engage with the thinking and practice behind many different kinds of music will be helpful for a successful collaboration.
THE COLLABORATION
Will consist in a dialogue with a music ensemble of five to ten musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds as well as with a team of artist-researchers from various international universities, who will accompany and observe this process. The collaboration will be documented as an audio-visual recording for later analysis, and all participants will be interviewed on video at the beginning and towards the end of the process.
The collaboration can take place in French and/or in English.
During and in between the workshops, the artist will explain/demonstrate their personal creative strategies to the musicians, who in turn will try translate them into strategies for musical composition.
The artist will accompany this process and correct misinterpretations, as well as offer artistic advice from her or his perspective.
The artist is not expected to create new work in their discipline for this process. They can use existing work as an example of their creative strategies. Of course, the artist is always welcome to independently make new work inspired by this collaboration, but it would not be considered a commission.
The work phases will begin in September 2018 and end in December 2018, and will comprise roughly 3-4 working sessions, usually lasting 1-3 days, depending on the creative idea.
The musical work resulting from this collaboration will be recorded and performed in concert at or after the end of the collaboration period.
If so desired, the artist can be named as the co-author of the resulting musical work. The artist will equally have the right to not be mentioned in connection with the work, but they cannot prevent the work itself from being recorded and/or performed.
The artist will be offered a lumpsum honorarium between $500 and $2000 for their efforts and time, according to the intensity of their involvement in the project.
APPLICATION
For those interested, we kindly ask you to submit a short letter of intent (one page maximum) with links to an online portfolio. The letter should offer an outline of your creative strategies and indicate how much time you can commit to the project during the period. If you already have an idea for a work you would like to use as the starting point for this collaboration, please provide a brief description with a link, if available.
TIMELINE
The search will continue until the position is filled. However, we will start reviewing candidates after March 5, and we hope to have a shortlist by March 25. Sandeep Bhagwati and other team members would then meet with the shortlisted artists in person to discuss the possible collaboration. According to how these conversations go, we will invite 1,2 or even 3 artists for a collaboration by May 1. Conceptual conversations may continue over the summer, but concrete work phases will happen between September and December and will be co-ordinated by Doodle. The collaboration phase will be over by mid-December. Concerts and recordings may happen at a later date.
ABOUT THE « ECSTASIES OF INFLUENCE » PROJECT

“Can we transfer creative strategies from other artistic domains into music creation? Can a sequence of sounds be composed the way a choreographer composes a sequence of movements in space, a poet composes an arrangement of words, a novelist follows characters through a plot? Can music be staged the same way a director stages a play or a visual artist conceives an installation? The “Ecstasies of Influence” (E°I) research-creation project explores inter-artistic ways of conceiving, creating and composing musical performances and productions, influenced by dialogues with and transfers from other artistic practices.
An inter-traditional music ensemble will engage with artists from other disciplines to understand their creative process, their aesthetic strategies and their material – and try to transfer these insights to a musical composition, through a constantly dialogical iterative process of distributed creativity. Documented by a team of artist-researchers this project could offer deep insights into where art forms are different – and where they speak to us in similar ways.”
