On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Phosphore collection, published by Presses de l’Université Laval, the Librairie du Québec welcomes Marie-Christiane Mathieu, co-researcher and director of the collection, to present her unique vision of this series. She will be accompanied by her research assistant and student member, Jonathan Cantin-Demers.

Phosphore is a collection devoted to artists’ writings, texts that approach art as research, and the development of concepts that shape interdisciplinary practices and theories in art—particularly in the fields of visual, contextual, media, and technological arts. The published works address social, economic, and political issues that influence artistic creation. The collection offers artists, theorists, and writers a versatile platform to build an original body of work in various formats: catalogue, essays, limited-edition artists’ books, and periodicals.

The Bibliothèques section of the Phosphore collection emphasizes the importance of personal libraries in the lives of artists, architects, art historians, philosophers, scientists, and readers from all walks of life. As a foundation for research and a source of wandering or discovery, the library is a living material where thought evolves. This section was created to highlight the uniqueness of these libraries.

Marie-Christiane Mathieu, Ph.D., is an artist, professor, and co-researcher at the School of Visual Arts at Université Laval. Her projects explore, through various devices, the concept of the bubble in which each individual lives, which she calls “l’aître” (being + space). Since 2012, she has been developing a tool-truck, a studio, and a house on wheels that she uses in her most recent productions.
