Re-Create 2015 offers new and unique activities around the central theme of research-creation, presenting the most current issues related to the links of research with creative practices. The scope of Re-Create 2015 will explore the relations between theory and material practices as integral parts of the creative process. Topics of discussion will include the history of research-creation, technological innovation and the impact of new methods on research. The conference will appeal to those interested in media art, history and technology.

Re-Create 2015 is a major event which includes 53 individual presentations and 13 group presentations taking place in 16 plenary sessions, along with 3 keynotes. The Emerging Researchers’ Symposium (students) takes place on November 4, followed by the Bridge Panel on the morning of November 5, leading to the main conference from November 5 to 8. The entirety of the event will bring together 81 researchers working in a variety of disciplines, including digital art, design, sociology, art history, anthropology, game studies, philosophy and communication. 21 countries are represented: Canada, the United States, Japan, Iceland, Germany, Chile, Colombia, Peru, France, Australia, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, India, Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Croatia, Switzerland and Latvia.

Re-Create 2015 will bring a lively cultural presence in Montreal, with five public presentations, including three exhibitions to take place at Concordia University and one a large-scale architectural projection at UQAM. The programme of the event also includes several satellite activities.

Re-Create 2015 is organized by Hexagram, the International Network for Research-Creation co-founded in 2001 by Concordia University and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and co-chaired by Chris Salter (Concordia) and Gisèle Trudel (UQAM). Manuelle Freire, PhD candidate at Concordia University, is MAH Re-Create 2015 conference manager. The two campuses are located in the heart of downtown Montreal’s cultural district, a privileged geographical location for Re-Create 2015. Hexagram is hosting this major event, which builds on its 14 years of experience and growth, towards becoming a unique network for research-creation in Quebec and Canada.

  • Emerging Researchers’ Symposium

    Emerging Researchers’ Symposium

    UQAM
    November 4th 2015, 9AM à 5PM

In collaboration with Re-Create 2015, the Emerging Researchers’ Symposium on November 4th highlights the contributions of emerging artists and scholars to the growing interdisciplinary field of research and creation. With nearly 40 participants, the symposium is a unique opportunity for graduate students to partake in critical discussions on practice, research and media in their different forms, as these structures develop and are questioned.

The new specialists have an important voice to be heard in these debates because they are both at the heart of discussion and the future of it, as they question disciplinary boundaries, shared values and established definitions, and redefine the goals and horizons of research and practice in creation, both within and outside institutions. Through the dialogues it will generate, the symposium will allow identifying the emerging movements and directions towards the future avenues for research and media arts practice.

The Symposium team is composed of students from the four Montreal universities, under the responsibility of Cécile Martin, master of architecture, and doctoral student at Concordia University.

As indicated in the subtitle of Re-Create 2015, the Emerging Researchers’ Symposium will discuss theories, methods and research-creation practices in the history of art, science and media technologies. The Explorations Space diversifies the presentation formats in their methodologies and research questions, ranging in nature from the theoretical, historical to creative practices in the form of video presentations, prototypes, interactive media and posters.

During Re-Create 2015, the International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology will award a scholarship to the best student presentation in the Symposium. The recipient will be awarded $ 1,000 to support his/her research. This award is generously donated by the Leonardo / International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (Leonardo / ISAST), the Leonardo Book Series and MIT Press (publisher of Relive: Media Art Histories).

  • Bridge event

    UQAM
    November 5th 2015

The Bridge panel session will link the topics and questions arisen from the presentations and summaries of the Emerging Researchers’ Symposium with the program of the Media Art Histories’ conference. BRIDGE will thus prepare grounds for the entanglements among practices, theories and methods within media art, design, science and technology. All delegates are welcome to this participatory debate.

The Latin American Music Collection. Une recherche menée par Ricardo Dal Farra.

Latin American electroacoustic music has a long, interesting, strong and prolific history, but it’s a history that is little known even within the region itself. Many composers born or living in Latin America have been very active in this field, going back as far as some 50 years, in some countries. In an effort to preserve, document and disseminate at least a portion of the electroacoustic music created by Latin American composers, an archive has been developed at the Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science, and Technology.

Ricardo Dal Farra has been conducting activities in the merging fields of arts, sciences and new technologies as a composer and multimedia artist, researcher, educator, performer and curator focusing mainly on new media arts and electroacoustic music, for over 30 years. He is Associate Professor of the Music Department at Concordia University.
